WAYS TO HELP YOUR CHILD WHILE LEARNING AT HOME We understand that during this time of your child's home instruction, it can be stressful at times. A big shout out to one of our FDISD parents, Sarah Medley, for posting this letter to all of our teachers An open letter to all the FDISD teachers, Thank you. Thank you for going above and beyond for our kids. Thank you for taking the time and effort to put together a parade, something seemingly so small, that meant so much. You provided a window of normalcy for our kiddos in this time of chaos. If I'm being totally honest, I cried watching Y'all come down the road. My boy was so so excited to see all of you! Thank you for taking the time to put together live lessons, and allowing them to not only participate, but connect with you and their classmates. (Lord knows you need an award for that alone!) It is so good for them to get to see their school family, and I've definitely noticed a difference in Harper with just that alone. And most importantly, thank you for loving these kids. It shows, and for that I am so thankful. Our children are so blessed to have a school, and community, willing to do what you do daily. Loving You All ❤, A Grateful Momma We are grateful for all the parents who are supporting their children and our district as we go through this challenging time. Thank you!

Fort Davis High School Library News! The students at Fort Davis High School were thrilled to receive good news twice in the last few weeks! They have gotten two generous grants to update the high school library. Last spring a small group of students decided that they wanted to access the library more than they have been and they took it upon themselves to see how to accomplish this goal. Three students turned into six students and the group has now grown to nine students. They contacted the Jeff Davis County Community Library and have gotten incredible support from them and from the Friends of the Library. With their help, they were able to write a grant proposal and they were recently awarded $15,000 for the project. The Jeff Davis County Child Welfare Board also became aware of their efforts and awarded another $1,500 in addition to donating a generous amount of school supplies. Plans are now underway to paint the library, remove some shelves, restore the floor, purchase new furniture, and begin the arduous task of inventorying and purchasing new materials. The students are so grateful they live in a community that supports them in endeavors like this! Students pictured include: Rebekah Hicks, Karla Ramos, Jeremy Miles, Alan Cerda, Austyn Simpson. Not pictured are Cindy Calderon, Abby Martini, Maisie Corbin, and Violet Sagers.

Friday, September 27, is our first Indian Day of the school year. This is a day for tutorials, state assessment remediation, and/or a requirement for students to complete missing classwork. The district has designated the last Friday of four six-week grading periods this year as Indian Day. The schools will provide written notice to parents/guardians if their child will be required to attend, hours of attendance, and subject area. Students who do not require remediation or tutorials, or who have completed all classwork will not be required to attend school that day. Indian Day will also be held November 1, February 14, and April 3. Extra time is often needed to work with students who may be falling behind in work or require remediation. Indian Day will allow teachers to work with small groups of students to help improve their academic skills. If a child is assigned to attend, then attendance is mandatory. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s teacher or the principal.

Thanks to a Texas Workforce Solutions, Borderplex Education Grant, Fort Davis High School was able to begin a Robotics program for the 2018 - 2019 school year. With this grant, we were able to purchase VEX Robotics Dual Control Starter Kits and VEX IQ Super Kits as well as the Competition Field Perimeter Kit. We were able to initiate two classes with a total of seven students for the 2018-2019 school year and have had at least triple that number of students interested in these classes for this school year. In our pioneer classes, students were able to design, build, troubleshoot and then rebuild four robots. They took two of their robots to their first competition in Pecos, TX and managed to show very respectable places in the middle of the field. These courses are so important because they allow students to have real “hands on” training in modern day skills. They have learned programming but they have also used engineering skills, problem solving skills, and collaborative skills they never knew they had. As a result of this course, they are now aware of a multitude of robotics related careers in medicine, engineering, entertainment, and education.

Your purchase of yearbooks and graduate books helps our environment. We have partnered with TreeRing for the production of our yearbooks. "TreeRing’s environmental roots go deeper than our name. We kinda like this planet, so we’ve partnered with Trees for the Future to plant a tree for every yearbook purchased. In addition, we print on recycled paper and only produce the exact number of books parents buy, eliminating unnecessary waste and resources. Not only can our school partners feel good about providing students and parents with a yearbook that captures their personal memories, they can also have confidence in the sustainable and environmentally conscious approach we take in producing them. It’s the least we can all do for the next generation." At least 130 trees will be planted for the 2018-2019 books!

Students at Fort Davis JSHS and Dirks-Anderson will be taking STAAR tests next week from April 9th-11th. Some students may have to test through lunch, so sending your student to school with a lunch on their testing days may be beneficial. Please help your student get plenty of rest and a breakfast before they test. Also, please keep distractions or visitations to the school at a minimum during these testing days. We look forward to a successful week of testing, thank you!

Friday, November 2, is the second Indian Day of the school year. This is a day for tutorials, state assessment remediation, and/or a requirement for students to complete missing classwork. The district has designated the last Friday of four six-week grading periods this year as Indian Day. Students who do not require remediation or tutorials, or who have completed all classwork will not be required to attend school that day. The schools will provide written notice to parents/guardians if their child will be required to attend, hours of attendance, and subject area. Indian Day will also be held Feb. 15 and April 5.

Mini cheerleaders should report to the football field from 5-6 PM today for their refresher course. If you picked up your shirt and poms at the Pep Rally last night, you can wear your shirt and bring your poms. For those who have not picked them up, we will hand them out at the refresher course and you can change into your shirt at the stadium. Warm pants and jackets can also be worn due to the weather. Mini cheerleaders will be able to sing the National Anthem with Dirks Anderson. After the National Anthem, they should go to the end zone with the JH and Varsity Cheerleaders to prepare for the run through at the beginning of the game. We look forward to a great Homecoming Game and Festivities! Go Indians!

Fort Davis ISD has designated the last Friday of four six-week grading periods this year as Indian Day. Indian Day will be a day for tutorials, state assessment remediation, and/or a requirement for students to complete missing classwork. We will provide written notice to parents/guardians if their child will be required to attend, hours of attendance, and subject area. Students who do not require remediation or tutorials, or who have completed all classwork will not be required to attend school that day. The first Indian Day is this Friday, September 28th. Indian Day will also be held Nov. 2nd, Feb. 15th, and Apr. 5th. Extra time is often needed to work with students who may be falling behind in work or require remediation. Indian Day will allow teachers to work with small groups of students to help improve their academic skills. If your child is assigned to attend, then attendance is mandatory. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s teacher or the principal.

It’s a new school year and time for Read Fort Davis to begin again at Dirks-Anderson Elementary School! The program, modeled on Read Marfa, the successful volunteer program at Marfa Elementary, brings the community, along with new books and materials, into the elementary school to help improve student literacy. A meeting for returning volunteers and community members interested in becoming reading volunteers will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13 at the Dirks-Anderson Library. The program will begin Monday, Sept. 17. Community members are invited to sign up as volunteers, committing to read to a small group of students for thirty minutes, once per week, for six weeks. The goal is to provide all Dirks-Anderson students, Pre-Kindergarten through grade 5, with a regular read-aloud time each week. Read Fort Davis is made possible through grants from Still Water Foundation and Permian Basin Area Foundation and Ann Marie Nafziger, Read Marfa founder. Returning volunteers will receive an email with a link to sign up at SignUp.com for a reading spot, or they can sign up at the Sept. 13 meeting. To become a volunteer or for more information, email readfortdavis@fdisd.com or call Dirks-Anderson Elementary at 432-426-4454.
